Job Description

The phlebotomist is responsible for the collection and processing of specimens from patients, recording findings in accordance with established protocols under direct supervision. Instrument maintenance and quality control procedures are carried out as needed by this employee in accordance with instructions. Compliance with the company’s quality and safety standards is ensured. Assists in the flow of patients as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • During specimen processing, control, and monitoring, you may handle infectious or carcinogenic materials. Keep an inventory and order supplies as required.
  • Understand local computer system menus as they relate to work function, including teaching technical personnel sophisticated computer tasks.
  • Blood specimens should be obtained using standard venipuncture and capillary procedures (adult and pediatric), as well as urine or other samples as directed by the doctor.
  • Customer service that is both pleasant and efficient, in accordance with departmental standards and procedures, including the ability to schedule complicated text messages.
  • In order to preserve the integrity of the specimens while they are being processed, packaged, and transported to the right laboratory, established laboratory procedures must be followed.
  • Carry out quality control procedures that are suitable for the testing that was carried out and record your findings in the appropriate log. If the result(s) are outside of their limitations, you should report it to the Medical Technologist or the Laboratory Manager.
  • Complete the necessary laboratory forms to record the tests completed and to note the diagnosis associated with the tests performed, Complete the lab requisition forms and create the relevant labels for the forms and the specimen container at the laboratory (s).
  • For each laboratory test request, the quantity and kind of containers needed for delivery should be determined.
  • Assist with infection control by keeping the lab clean and emptying biohazard bags regularly.
  • Drawing blood from a patient is a common procedure. As directed by the department lab professional and pathology staff, operate laboratory instruments autonomously including difficult troubleshooting and arranging field service visits.

Skills:

  • Effective and efficient venipuncture is required. Proficiency with patients and staff in fostering productive relationships Ability to choose priorities and manage one’s time.
  • Sit for long periods of time, move between office buildings, and lift and carry at least 30 pounds. Have experience working with patients, their significant others, and family members from different racial and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Lab solutions and materials and media must be understood to perform one’s obligations in the field of chemistry. Data input requires familiarity with Microsoft Excel and electronic medical records (EMRs).
  • A high school diploma or its equivalent is required. Associate degree in Natural Science/Allied Health desirable, or current enrollment in Medical Laboratory Science program, lab experience preferable. Medical terminology and keyboarding abilities are desirable.
  • Six (6) months of phlebotomy and skin puncture experience is desirable. Valid driver’s license and insurance company requirements.
